The Coachella stage on Saturday hosted 88rising’s “Head in the Clouds Forever” set, which featured K-pop group aespa bringing plenty of energy to the quartet’s debut performance at the festival.
“Head in the Clouds Forever” was created to promote and showcase a mix of Asian artists, and the collaborative ensemble made history when 88rising became the first label to receive a performance spot at Coachella Valley Music and ArtsFestival. In addition to aespa, the timeslot included Yeek, MILLI, AUGUST 08, Dumbfoundead, Rich Brian and Warren Hue.
Here are the five best moments from the shoot.
1. aespa confidently debuts
K-pop group aespa, consisting of Karina, Giselle, Winter and Ningning, performed at Coachella for the first time, and the set also marked the quartet’s first-ever US performance. The girl group played the hits “Savage”, “Next Level” and “Black Mamba” and a new song made just for Coachella. The song is about enjoying life because, as the band says, “life is too short”. Along with showing off their voices, the performers dominated the stage with confident dance moves.
In an interview with Billboard, Karina said performing in front of a large crowd will be a new experience as the band “hasn’t had much experience performing live in front of an audience since our debut during the pandemic.” But the band were warmly welcomed by the Coachella crowd, and earlier in the day various banners attached to planes flying over the grounds were spotted with the members’ names on love messages.
2. LA Representation
Jonathan Edgar Park, better known by his stage name Dumbfoundead, did Los Angeles proud by opening the 88rising set. The rapper sang “Hyung” and “Water.” He also got our vote for best dressed, donning a comfy green sweater that was perfect for the cooler nighttime temperatures.
3. AUGUST 08 makes us fall in love
Rapper AUGUST 08 told the crowd on the Coachella stage that he wanted everyone to fall in love with him, and he absolutely succeeded. He dazzled during his part of the 88rising set, singing his latest single “500 Days.” Anyone who has that confidence in a performer can steal our hearts any day.
4. Collaborations galore
With so many artists lined up for 88rising, it’s no surprise we’ve had a ton of collaborations. AUGUST 08 joined Indonesian rapper Rich Brian for “Midsummer Madness,” and Brian later teamed up with Hue for “Getcho Mans.” Hue had his own collaboration with Hong Kong-born Korean producer Chasu for “Candy Choppa.” All of the performers who took the stage kept the energy going throughout the set, which made it hard for anyone to stop dancing and jamming.
5. Dreams came true on Saturday
Performing at Coachella is a dream come true for many entertainers, and Filipino-American entertainer Yeek certainly felt the magic. During his part of the 88rising set, Yeek sang “Freaky”, “3000 Miles (Baby Baby)” and a new song. He smiled throughout his performance, which made it even more fun to watch.
