Clemson QB DJ Uiagalelei didn’t have the performances many Tiger fans had hoped for as we head into the week off of the 2021 season.
In the first five games of the season, Uiagalelei has completed only 54.3% of his passes for 793 yards and three touchdowns with three interceptions.
These are certainly not numbers one would have expected this season when many believed Uiagalelei had the opportunity to win the Heisman.
DJ Uiagalelei ranks behind Jake Bentley and Chase Brice in the PFF ranking
Focus on professional football recently released his FBS Week 6 Quarterback Rankings for the 130 starting quarterbacks of the FBS. Several factors went into these rankings, including career profiles and more.
Uiagalelei was listed in “Needs to upgrade level” at 94th rank.
Two notable names that came before him: Jake Bentley (# 85, Southern Alabama) and Chase Brice (# 50, App State). For those who don’t remember, Bentley was once South Carolina’s starting quarterback and lost his job. He transferred to Utah and now plays for Southern Alabama. Chase Brice was Clemson’s second football quarterback from 2017 to 2019 before transferring to Duke and he is now at Appalachian State.
Here’s a look at the top 5 PFF quarterbacks in the country:
- Malik Willis (Freedom)
- Spencer Rattler (Oklahoma)
- Matt Corral (Ole Miss)
- Grayson McCall (Carolina Coast)
- Bryce Young (Alabama)
There are certainly arguments to be had with PFF about their ranking and a lot of them just don’t make sense. Even with all the weak points this season, I wouldn’t take Bentley over Uiagalelei.
That being said, these rankings show that there is a long way to go to improve and, honestly, we didn’t need to see them to find out.
DJ Uiagalelei is working hard to make improvements and there is no doubt that he has the desire to be a great player at this level and the next. He has a few flaws, but he has also shown his potential.
All Clemson football fans are hoping the Tigers find a way to put it all together and we start to see Uiagalelei show more consistency and reach that potential.
