Brandi Carlile, “In those silent days” (Elektra)

In 2019, Carlile brought her song “The Joke” to the Grammys for a stunning performance that seemed to finally turn her into a star. Soon she reunited with Elton John and Joni Mitchell and wrote a successful memoir, “Broken Horses,” retracing her sometimes painful journey as a practicing gay child in rural Washington state.

Her new – and seventh – album opens with another wonder: a piano ballad titled “Right on Time”, in which she hits a high note, then climbs a few more steps just to make sure she tingles. the backbone of every listener. Other cups reflect on marriage, loyalty and religious hypocrisy, and offer hard-earned parenting advice to her children, as in “Stay Gentle” imbued with harmony.

Sincere and intimate even when Carlile directs her songs towards the rafters, “In These Silent Days” is sure to appeal to longtime fans who have followed the singer since she began working on the Seattle club scene in the early years. 2000s.

Tirzah, “Color” (Domino)

Some pop artists amplify familiar and universal feelings: the sweet moments in love, the twisting pain of grief. But others require that we listen with different ears. They ask us to resist the desire to fully understand music. This is the crux of the new album by this British singer-songwriter. The 10-song collection is a fluid excursion through trip-hop, noise, R&B, and electronic music, but genre categories can’t capture its fluid depth.

Tirzah has long had a knack for meditative and asymmetrical pop. Recorded after the birth of her first child and shortly before the arrival of her second, “Colorgrade” addresses the themes of motherhood, birth, death and community. But rather than making a pink album on parenting, the album revel in mood, intimacy and texture.

About the Gregor Kaufmann project

Long after taking an almost 20-year hiatus from music, Neumann returned with The Gregory Kaufmann Project, comprising an extensive discography of his original tracks which he had for over thirty years on his album “Analog Tapes”. Under his new brand, Neumann released his first single, “Indian 56,” on July 22, 2021. The song is still available for public download on SoundCloud, Apple Music, Spotify and Deezer.

Ostrava Days, Ostrava, Czech Republic, August 20-21, 2021 – The Brooklyn Rail https://siebenviertel.com/ostrava-days-ostrava-czech-republic-august-20-21-2021-the-brooklyn-rail/ https://siebenviertel.com/ostrava-days-ostrava-czech-republic-august-20-21-2021-the-brooklyn-rail/#respond Tue, 05 Oct 2021 23:14:37 +0000 https://siebenviertel.com/ostrava-days-ostrava-czech-republic-august-20-21-2021-the-brooklyn-rail/

Ostrava Days Festival is a biennial new music festival founded and still directed by longtime New Yorker, flautist and composer Petr Kotík, born in Prague. The structure of the festival tends to repeat itself every two years, but a recent addition to the 2021 schedule has made a successful comeback. On the second day, August 20, The Long Night began at 5 p.m. and continued uninterrupted until nearly noon on Sunday 21, the third day of the festival. Your scribe had already had one hell of a day of super-tough travel on the 19th, thus arriving too late for the opening performances at Hlubina’s former coal mine, Brickhouse. The long night was a perfect way to recover!

Alvin Curran conducted a gratis open-air performance in Masaryk Square in Ostrava, presenting his revised work from 1984 Era Ora (on wheels). It was a spatial wandering, with traveling horns and samba percussionists regularly changing their locations, using the buildings surrounding the square as a huge reverb chamber. The pianos were seated on wooden platforms, moving slowly on wheels. The drumbeats simulated another echo, as positions shifted, and a crazy looking dude walked through the ranks, screaming and waving his hands. It turned out to be Curran himself. Eventually the groupings clarified into static states, and a sort of motley system-building developed, with young people holding instruction cards for the players. Even the regular squirts of the plaza fountain have become part of the room flow. Being an unusual work, besides presenting a jazzy highlight, it was a cheerful way to involve random public passers-by, as well as festival devotees.

The parking lot at the Cathedral of the Divine Savior was the next stop, with percussionist Chris Nappi performing as James Tenney Never have written a note for percussion (1971). Nappi was seated in front of a large gong, just outside the front doors, programmed to accompany the gloriously ringing bells, creating a subliminal shimmer that gradually became more audible as the cathedral’s tintinnabulum gradually decreased in volume. Once the big bells fell silent, Nappi’s gong sounded disappointing, as the composition eventually withered into nothingness. Nappi thanked the audience and his gong, but unfortunately not the bells above.

Most of the 6-hour program took place inside the Jiří Myron Theater, split between its foyer and the main stage. Kotik’s new Three in one (2020-2021) for trombones, tuba, percussion, violin and flute paid special attention to positioning, with violinist Hana Kotková standing on a frontal platform and the horns in two groups at the rear. The hard, angry kick drum and the bongos throbbed, as the tuba walked high, then the second phase had one of the two percussionists switch to the trombone, the new pair probing their highest baby elephant ranges, Kotík adding his flute. Our ears found cool frequencies, while the drums vibrated like reeds. Kotík played a completely solo stretch of absolute tranquility, joined by the violin for a combined drag. These absolute contrasts have become the heart of this work, the movement from one kingdom to another being precisely in balance. Muted bones burst into the peace screaming, while the flute remained uncompromising. A gong hammered on a metal plate signaled another breed of gentleness, as the mutes came to an end.

Bassist Franti ?? ek Výrostko is a regular member of this festival’s house collective, Ostravská Banda, and is originally from Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia. He took his BraCk Players for an orgy of sturdy, harshly amplified and rubbed string pieces by Pauline Kim, Matej Sloboda and James Ilgenfritz, all written over the past two years. The fierce focus of the players passed through Kim’s dramatic and scorching glass lens. Výrostko played bass up front, supported by a cello, viola and two violins, but the music sounded far more aggressive than it would suggest, loaded with hard-drawn bows and expressing rawness. Ilgenfritz Real and unreal irreversibilities (2020) greeted the darkest bass sound of all, a primordial terror spreading, contemplating horror. The fear within was brushed aside, sobbing, as others slyly, slightly active, encroached upon the primordial textures. Flayed shots led to harassment from pizzicato, like Iannis Herrmann in a barren skate park. Sloboda’s piece revolved around very slow resonances, with thin violin detail emanating from searing fury.

Morton In The Morning repeated last year’s awakening with a 1978 10am reading from Feldman Why motives? Kotík’s flute joined by Ivo Kahánek’s piano and Chris Nappi’s percussions. The three faced each other, inward, intertwining in a circular ebb and flow, a swelling of emphasis on a particular instrument passing intangibly from one to the other, phrases often repeated and continuing their life through the next player. The duration of 40 minutes flew away, subjectively accelerated by the experience of this realization of slow passage. These contemplative conclusions from Feldman to The Long Night look is fast becoming a tradition.

A few hours later, at 4 p.m., the Electronic Music Minimarathon was underway at the Galerie des Beaux-Arts, a more conventional setting after that of Michal Coal ine in 2019. It only lasted seven hours and more. is mostly focused on the electronic transformation of acoustic foundations.

Jan Du ?? ek and Pavel Duda performed on their digital keyboards, with piano sounds tuned in quarter-tones, revisiting innovative works from the period between 1924 and ’34, by Charles Ives, Karel Ančerl and Ivan Wyschnegradski. These were technically interesting for a short time, but eventually produced a nauseous state of frustration, which caused your scribe to take time off before the end. He prefers his micro-tonalism when found in the more organic and spontaneous form of western free improvisation or traditional eastern hovering. These piano works were too close to what many ears were forced to expect, so close they sounded “out of tune,” lacking the complete non-mathematical roaming of free or folk.

The following ensemble had a contrasting character of energized ecstasy. Steve Reich’s Violin phase(1967) and Piano phase (1967) preceded a masterful achievement of Different trains(1988), with two other digital pianists (Michal Nejtek, Roman Pallas), violinist David Danel and the string quartet Fama Q. The small audience seated or standing were crammed into the small upper gallery, creating the crackle of a concert of rock, as high volume train and vocals filled the space, the strings offering manic, strafed intensity. , the grim tale of the work was fully communicated in a way that seemed genuinely and totally unknown, as if it had premiered this year, rather than 1988.

Richard H Kirk, musician whose work with Cabaret Voltaire was an inspiration for the electronic dance music revolution – obituary https://siebenviertel.com/richard-h-kirk-musician-whose-work-with-cabaret-voltaire-was-an-inspiration-for-the-electronic-dance-music-revolution-obituary/ https://siebenviertel.com/richard-h-kirk-musician-whose-work-with-cabaret-voltaire-was-an-inspiration-for-the-electronic-dance-music-revolution-obituary/#respond Tue, 05 Oct 2021 05:00:00 +0000 https://siebenviertel.com/richard-h-kirk-musician-whose-work-with-cabaret-voltaire-was-an-inspiration-for-the-electronic-dance-music-revolution-obituary/

It all started to add up to what Sounds writer Jon Savage described as “a cold but hard beat, bursts of sound slowly making their way under your skin.” To counter any danger of infertility, Kirk told Savage: “We try to be as spontaneous as possible and understand as quickly as possible how we are feeling.”

Taking its name from the Zurich nightclub that gave birth to Dadaism, Cabaret Voltaire has established itself as a musical force in their city. But Kirk denied that they were trying to convey the noise of the Industrial North in the same way the sounds of West Midlands factories infiltrated heavy metal. “It was dark, Sheffield, but it was the boredom it created that prompted us to create the group,” he said.

During their first concert, in 1975, the crowd, thinking that they were going to hear a conventional group, revolted; it was an experience with which Cabaret Voltaire would become familiar.

A scene from Sheffield began to merge, including Human League (and later their offshoot, Heaven 17) and Clock DVA. In 1978 Cabaret Voltaire established Western Works, a rehearsal and recording studio in what had been the offices of the Sheffield Federation of Young Socialists. They were to appear on the Industrial label run by Throbbing Gristle, but a lack of money meant they ended up on Rough Trade, releasing their debut album, Mix-Up, in October 1979, shortly after one of the their most famous singles. , Nag Nag Nag.

Adele fans believe ’30’ billboards mean her 4th album is on the way https://siebenviertel.com/adele-fans-believe-30-billboards-mean-her-4th-album-is-on-the-way/ https://siebenviertel.com/adele-fans-believe-30-billboards-mean-her-4th-album-is-on-the-way/#respond Sat, 02 Oct 2021 20:20:38 +0000 https://siebenviertel.com/adele-fans-believe-30-billboards-mean-her-4th-album-is-on-the-way/

Rumor has it … that a new Adele the album is coming out, although the artist herself doesn’t seem to know when she’ll be releasing it.

The Oscar-winning actress hasn’t debuted on any new music since November 2015, when she released her third album, 25. Even though it was released late in the year, it quickly became the best-selling album of 2015, and ultimately, the fourth best-selling album of the 21st century. (Adèle’s second album, 21, takes first place in the latter list.)

Fans believed a reprieve might come when the London native connected to the host an October 2020 episode of Saturday Night Live, but the singer of “Rolling in the Deep” only took care of the duties of master of ceremonies during HER played as a musical guest.

” There are several reasons “, Adele said during her monologue, explaining why she wouldn’t sing that night. “My album isn’t finished and I’m too scared to do both. I’d rather just put on wigs – and that’s all mine, by the way – have a glass of wine, or six, and see what happens.

Following her SNL appearance, the Golden Globe winner retired from public life until April 2021, when she was preview at an Oscars after party for Daniel Kaluuya. Although she looked fabulous in a lime green feathered coat, this release gave no indication that an album was imminent.

Fans can’t even assume that Adele will stick to her usual style of rising pop ballads. In May 2019, she joked via Instagram that her followers were a “bunch of wild f — king” for bombarding her with questions about the album. “30 will be a drum n bass record to upset you,” she joked, referring to a subgenre of electronic music.

In December 2020, session musician Matt Chamberlain claimed that the “Chasing Pavements” singer had written new songs with the producer Rick Nowels, who co-wrote the 25 bonus song “Why do you love me”. In addition to working with Madonna, Dua Lipa and Lykke li, Nowels is known as a longtime collaborator of Lana del rey, having worked on all his albums since 2012.

No matter what it looks like, however, there is no doubt that # Adele4 will be a huge hit. In 2012, Adele became the second artist in history – and the first woman – to have won Grammys in each of the “Big Four” categories of the awards ceremony: Best New Artist, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year. Only one other artist, Billie Eilish, has since done.

“I wanted this feeling of belonging with other queer people” https://siebenviertel.com/i-wanted-this-feeling-of-belonging-with-other-queer-people/ https://siebenviertel.com/i-wanted-this-feeling-of-belonging-with-other-queer-people/#respond Sat, 02 Oct 2021 04:00:22 +0000 https://siebenviertel.com/i-wanted-this-feeling-of-belonging-with-other-queer-people/

A slow burner, a hard worker, loyal, considerate, a contemplative person who thinks about things a lot, maybe too much at times – that’s how Elaine Mai describes herself, and she’s right. She has come a long way from being one of the faces of State magazine in 2012 to releasing a debut solo album almost a decade later. As an artist, she notes: “I’ve taken a trip over the past 10 years to try to get to where I am now. It’s been an intentional passage of one type of music over a pretty long period of time, so I’m taking my time with things. I would never come out with something that I wasn’t really happy with. It just doesn’t interest me.

Hailing from Co Mayo, but now residing in Dublin (a short walk from the Glasnevin Botanic Gardens), Mai easily went from group to solo format. Fans of Irish music with long memories may remember her in the Galway-based band Go Panda Go, with whom she sang and presented a symbiotic mix of samples and synths, but she has long since established a one-person course. The intentional movement Mai refers to is a transfer from the early guitar loyalties (“Nirvana; a metallic phase”) to layering and creating electronic music. “I’m at this point where I’m just making the music that I love,” she says. “There’s a little bit of perfectionism in there, but that’s fine with me, and I’d rather never come out with anything again than something that I wasn’t completely happy with.” I just wanted it to be as good as possible.

Despite her solo status, Mai is astute enough (and fond of textures enough) to know that mixing vocals with synths can often create something that takes experimentation into a whole other realm. Her first collaborations date back to her student days in Galway with Irish producer / composer Daithí Ó Drónaí (“he’s a good friend of mine, we’ve always done it because he’s a good craic and we love to experiment ), But she’s never gone outside since, working with freelance artists – mostly women – such as Loah, Sinead White, MayKay and Ailbhe Reddy. “There is a shared experience of women because, as has been pointed out many times, there are a lot of struggles that women face in the music industry, and I think because of that, there is certainly a deeper level of fellowship and understanding. “

Shut in

Mai’s sense of perfectionism came at a price. Her debut album took a long time, she admits, as she threw away a lot of music. What was wrong with them?

“It’s a feeling, isn’t it?” I think all the songs that ended up on the album have a real emotional connection, there is something that attracts you. I wanted a mix of euphoria and melancholy – the album is called Home and so all the tracks relate to the title in some way. ”

I knew I was gay when I was around 15 so it was always one thing to know that when I went to college I would meet people like me and have that sense of community.

Amateur psychologists would have a field day here. Only child (“or” lonely “child as I long believed”) whose parents separated when she was 12, she hesitates to read too much but admits that a sense of belonging is important to her. . “You are a little more isolated when you are an only child. When I was a teenager growing up in Mayo, I sometimes felt isolated. I wanted to have that sense of belonging with other queer people, I guess, and maybe that’s something that stuck with me. Everyone needs to have some kind of support system around them.

It finally happened in his life. When her parents separated, she moved from “an extremely rural place” to a slightly larger city and from there to NUI Galway. “I knew I was gay when I was about 15, so it was always one thing to know that when I went to college I would meet people like me and have that sense of community. . I was not wrong then moving to Dublin, meeting people like me, blew me away.

Home is where you come from and where you live, but it’s so much more than that, especially from a queer person’s perspective. It’s like a club where your chosen family is

The creative elements of her life developed, she says, when she started using Ableton, a digital audio workstation that is not only an instrument in itself for live performances, but also a device for compose, record, arrange, mix and master. A different world opened up to her, she adds, “because you go from pretty limited possibilities with a guitar and a loop pedal to a number of them, which included hopping on YouTube and watching. tutorials, things like that, then the practical aspects of remixes that I’ve learned, and still learning, techniques.

When, I ask, did she get to the point where she knew she was good, and when the pursuit of perfectionism became a friend and not an enemy? “I started to feel a lot more confident about three or four years ago with the last EP I released, The Color of the Night. I felt it was strong enough. And a remix for Loah that I did a while back was really good, I thought.

Improving art and self is an ongoing thing for Mai, and it’s clear that her debut album is the substantial first step in everyone’s progression. Each of the nine pieces of Home, which she adheres to, refers to the notion of fitting in or finding your tribe.

“Home is where you come from and where you live, but it’s so much more than that, especially from a queer person’s perspective. Home is like a club with your chosen family. There’s a track on the album called Mother, and it’s literally about the club, the feeling when you’re there. The different ways of experiencing the feeling of belonging is an interesting topic for me. I think that feeling of wanting to belong is for everyone, wherever they are or with any group of people, but I really think it’s important for queer people.

We return to Home’s music and its interwoven blend of happiness and discouragement. How does she deal with the path from despair to euphoria? It can work both ways, she argues, as long as you have some degree of self-awareness to work your way through it. As she grew older, she says, she realized that life (“all the time”) is more or less the combination of misery and its opposite, and therefore every time she writes, the musical facets of each seep naturally.

When you’re younger you think you’re going to grow up and be happy forever, she says, but she knew that wasn’t going to happen when she started writing the EP The Color of the Night in 2017. “It was quite moving, because in no time my father, my uncle and a cousin passed away. I feel like this was my first truly intense experience of death. It hit me, I joined this club and understood the loss for the first time. Sadness shines through on this EP, as well as on someone going through a lot of emotions. Getting out of that and getting into the new album is a more balanced place for me in that regard. The problem with grief and grief is that you never really get over it, you just have to live with it.

Little shredded thrill: Elaine Mai on the raw power of Alanis Morissette

“For me as a teenager Alanis was one of the most raw, sincere and authentic artists, and I couldn’t get enough of her music. She sang in such a natural way and spoke honestly about her experiences that I was totally drawn to. She inspired me to pick up the guitar and write, and has had a huge influence on me throughout my life.

“Seeing yourself reflected in someone plays such an important role in making things possible. Alanis was a brilliant young woman who openly shared her experiences and she gave me the impression that a career in music was really possible.

Elaine Mai’s debut album Home will be released at Workman’s Club (Cellar), Dublin on Friday October 29th.
